Congo is crippled by external debt. Subsistence agriculture – chiefly for cassava – occupies over 30% of the labor force. </span><span class="style42">Currency:</span><span class="style13"> CFA franc.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Portuguese slave traders were active in the region from the 15th century. In the 1880s, the explorer Brazza placed the kingdom of the Teke people under French protection, and in 1905 the region became the colony of Moyen-Congo. Independence was gained in 1960. A Marxist-Leninist state was established in 1963, but a multi-party system was restored in 1991.</span></text>
